Why Is Baptism Important? — What Baptism Means and Why It Matters - Ep 44

Sep 1, 2026

Why is baptism important? What does the Bible actually teach about baptism, and does baptism save us?

In this episode of Milk to Meat, we take a biblical look at the meaning, purpose, and importance of Christian baptism. We explore why Jesus commanded His followers to be baptized, how baptism identifies us with Jesus, and what Romans 6 teaches about dying to our old life and rising to new life in Christ.

We also tackle an important question: Does baptism save us? We discuss the biblical distinction between salvation by faith and baptism as an act of obedience and public identification with Christ. The story of the thief on the cross in Luke 23:42–43 provides a powerful example that salvation comes through faith in Jesus—not through baptism.

But there is another fascinating aspect of Romans 6. Paul says, “consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:11). Rather than simply thinking of baptism as something that follows belief, Paul challenges believers to live in light of what their baptism declares.

In this episode, we discuss:

• Why Jesus was baptized and why He commanded His followers to be baptized

• Baptism as identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus

• The connection between baptism and new life in Christ

• Baptism as an act of obedience to Matthew 28:19

• Baptism as a public testimony of personal faith

• The biblical symbolism of cleansing, forgiveness, death, burial, and resurrection

• Why baptism does not save us and why salvation is by faith alone

• The thief on the cross and what his salvation teaches us about baptism

• Why faith precedes baptism in the biblical model

• Romans 6:11 and the connection between baptism and how we live

• What it means to live like what happened in baptism is actually true

Baptism isn't what saves you—but if you've placed your faith in Jesus, baptism is a powerful picture of what He has already done in you.

This is Milk to Meat, a discipleship podcast designed to help believers move from the “milk” of basic Christianity to the “meat” of deeper biblical understanding and spiritual maturity.
